Forty children at Rokeby Primary School are now riding high — thanks to a community-led project bringing refurbished bikes and new helmets to local families.

The initiative, delivered by R-evolution and proudly funded by Pickering Ward Council, saw 40 previously donated children’s bikes fully refurbished by our expert team of mechanics, volunteers, and trainees across our Cottingham and Scunthorpe workshops. Each pupil also received a brand-new helmet for safety and confidence.

In partnership with Humberside Police, every bike was also security marked to help deter theft and ensure any lost bikes can be returned to their rightful owners.

This project is part of R-evolution’s ongoing mission to reduce transport inequality and promote active, sustainable travel options — especially for young people. For many families, the cost of a new bike remains out of reach. This programme bridges that gap by reconditioning donated bikes and putting them directly into the hands of children who will benefit most.

These bikes aren’t just a way to get to school — they’re a vehicle for freedom, physical activity, and growing independence,” said Antony Forrester, Charity Development Manager at R-evolution. “And by partnering with local councils, schools, and police teams, we’re creating a joined-up approach to sustainability, education and wellbeing.”

This initiative also supports green skills development, as each bike is brought back to life by our trainees and volunteers learning hands-on mechanics in real-world community projects. It's a circular model with a positive environmental and social impact — reducing waste, building skills, and improving access to active travel.

Want to bring a bike library to your community?

We’re always looking for new partners to fund similar projects across the region. Whether it’s 10, 20 or 50 bikes, we can tailor a local bike library for children, young people or adults — giving more people the tools they need to ride into a healthier, more connected future.
