Horticulture Project

Thought we were just bikes? Think again!
We have a successful trainee programme in Normanby Hall, which trains individuals to gain a City and Guilds Qualification in Horticulture.

The Horticulture Project follows the same successful design as The Bike Project, in an entirely new setting. We’re big fans of learning, and we’re big fans of community. The Horticulture Project is based around both.

What is Horticulture?

Horticulture is another word for gardening, working with the land, cultivating, planting, sowing seeds, weeding, propagation, grass cutting, plant identification, weed identification and pruning.

How Does it Work?

Across different training sites, Trainees learn to propagate, grow and maintain plants in a range of settings. Horticulture represents a skills gap in our area, which provides our Trainees with a fair chance in the job market.

Our aim for the project is to offer a range of training and work opportunities for anyone who needs a helping hand, now delivering City and Guilds accredited qualifications, working closely with East Riding of Yorkshire Council, North Lincolnshire Council and Beverley Town Council. We understand that the job hunt process is more complex than this, which is why trainees are also supported with life coaching, peer mentoring, and soft skills development.
The Horticulture Project promotes community involvement; aiming to break down barriers, build relationships, and take advantage of the benefits of spending time outdoors. With exercise, fresh air, and the very tangible changes that occur as a result of their work, trainees experience a mental health boost that few standard training courses offer. As community is at the heart of what we do, training sites have been carefully chosen to ensure that trainees and volunteers can see the communal benefit of their hard work, and the community can meet the people behind it all.
Our main project is at Normanby Hall, where we help the horticulture staff help to maintain and enhance the beautiful grounds, we have a mixture of trainees working towards achieving a City & Guilds Qualification with out Tutor or assist on a voluntary basis.

We also run community projects around the Beverley area in partnership with Beverley Town Council and other partner organisations.
