Our Cycle AcademyThe Cycle Academy was born from a desire to share our skills with the youngest in our riding community. Because riding a bike is about more than just the ride. It encourages progression, pushes comfort zones, strengthens relationships and increases confidence; and what could be more valuable than that?
In partnership with Welcome to Yorkshire, East Riding of Yorkshire Council, Sport England, and sponsored by Viking FM - The Cycle Academy provides an innovative development pathway for young riders - giving them the opportunity to be part of a real cycling team, and the confidence to know that they, individually or collectively, are what makes it great. It can be easy to underestimate our younger generations. They grow up in an ever changing world, and it can be hard to understand, or to connect with their experiences. But that doesn’t mean it’s not important to try. They are, after all, the next generation of game changers. Athletes; academics; artists - whatever they decide to become, we’d like to believe in them; and we’d like for them to believe in themselves. We don’t do things by halves. So, as well as the basics of riding in a team - our Cycle Academy riders learn route planning, cycle safety, risk assessment, coaching, cycle maintenance, physio and nutrition. They even learn to marshall, coach, and perform first aid, as well as being encouraged to participate in their local community with volunteering. They take part in local sportives, cycling events, and even, in 2019, attended the Tour de Yorkshire. And it works. Our latest Cycle Academy graduates left with a distinct increase in confidence, better communication skills, a new-found enthusiasm for cycling, and perhaps best of all; the support of each other.
